In recent years, the entertainment industry has been led by superhero productions, which often dominate the sales and are already part of contemporary pop culture. At the head is Marvel Studios with a cinematographic universe that accumulates twenty-seven films and five series. Warner has also developed the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), a franchise that has more than ten titles. Parallel to this, numerous productions on vigilantes and superheroes belonging to other franchises and universes have proliferated in cinema, television and streaming platforms.

In the midst of this vast offer of movies and series focused on superheroic figures, every now and then there are titles that seek to propitiate turns in the genre. As they did at the time “Deadpool” or “The Boys”.

This 2022, one of those titles that offers a new air is “The Peacemaker”, a Spin-off series of “The Suicide Squad” written by James Gunn, who also directs five of its eight chapters.

If you want to know why you should watch this series, here we will tell you about the successes of the production.

The Peacemaker Story

Gunn in “The Suicide Squad” (2021) presented Peacemaker for the first time on the big screen, a foolish and incorrect antihero, whose maxim is to achieve peace no matter who he must kill for it. Now HBO Max gives us a series focused on this vigilante. It mixes large doses of humor and action, without neglecting the construction of a story that allows us to learn more about a character that has more nuances than we thought.

In this production we follow Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena) after the events of “The Suicide Squad”. After several months of recovery in the hospital, this antihero, instead of going back to prison, is recruited for a new mission in which a relentless assassin is necessary.

Reporting to Clemson Murn, Peacemaker will team with Harcourt, his support for field actions; Economos, an expert in communication and technology; Adebayo, a rookie agent; and Vigilante, another vigilante and friend of Peacemaker who manages to sneak into the mission. Together they will form a disparate group forced to understand each other to face a threat that threatens world security from the shadows.

The series certainly came to surprise. Before its premiere, its plot was almost unknown. On the other hand, Peacemaker was not the most appreciated character in The Suicide Squad, since by the end of the film he stands as a traitor and murders one of the squad’s characters. However, from the first chapter of the Gunn series, he manages to make fans put aside misgivings, empathize with the character and take an interest in his story.

In this production, Peacemaker transcends the idea of being just a lout with the wrong attitudes. He is humanized through a look at his past. He was raised by a rough and tumble white supremacist who disowns him. We are also given glimpses of the character’s most intimate and vulnerable parts, thus understanding how he has been shaped by a violent environment lacking paternal affection, in which a set of reprehensible actions are normalized. The interesting thing about the series is that it does all of the above without abandoning the tone of action and comedy.

This story shows us the evolution of Peacemaker. We show the weight of his actions in “The Suicide Squad” and how he is now immersed in a process of reflection that requires him to define himself and transform himself. The maxim of achieving peace no matter who must kill, chapter by chapter is faltering and Christopher Smith begins to question where the limits should be.

A success with the public and critics

With this series, James Gunn demonstrates his ability to take little-known comic book characters and make them immediately endearing. He already did it with “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad”. With “Peacemaker” he repeats the strategy successfully. The production has caught on well with the public and is among the most watched on HBO Max. The critics have also been satisfied with the originality of the proposal and the treatment of the characters. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series is listed with a 95% rating, making it the highest rated DCEU title on that platform. After “Peacemaker” would be “Wonder Woman” with 93% and “The Suicide Squad” with 90%.

The interpretation of John Cena has also been celebrated. We see him sing, dance, play the piano and give his best in various moments of action, comedy and drama.

A Universe that continues in expansion

The Peacemaker is the first series of the DCEU and the one that has opened the doors to continue expanding the franchise through this format. Given the good reception Gunn has stated that he is already working on another spin-off series of “The Suicide Squad” on a character not yet revealed.

With The Peacemaker it becomes clear that Gunn has had enough creative freedom and has given free rein to a humor that ranges from the silly to bordering on the politically incorrect. Humor that is generally effective and which constantly fluctuates with explicit violence and emotional moments, which together give the entire production a unique nuance and rhythm. All of the above means that “Peacemaker” is a series with a very strong personality that differentiates it from other superhero series and movies. In short, an ideal option for lovers of the genre who want to see productions that offer new approaches and approaches.
