According to Ford, the upcoming Shelby Mustang can lap a track faster than its main rival, and is as fast as the European sports cars like the Porsche 911 GT3.
According to MotorAuthority and Autoevolution Ford is claiming that its track-ready Shelby GT350R has lapped the Grattan Raceway a full second faster than the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and is on par with the Porsche 911 GT3. The track may not have the same recognition as say Laguna Seca or Road America, but it’s clear Ford is sparing no time earning its bragging rights.
Other details about the GT350R are being shared this week, including the vehicle’s weight of 3,650 lbs. That makes it 150 lbs lighter than a Mustang GT with the track package. In order to make this 5.2-liter V8 equipped muscle car weigh so less while packing things like a high tech magnetic suspension setup, Ford is using carbon fiber wheels and has left the air conditioning and rear seats behind. That V8 puts out an impressive 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and has a 8,250 RPM redline and should pair nicely to the vehicles low weight to deliver a truly exhilarating track experience.
Earlier this month, Ford detailed the standard customizable shift lights in the GT350 that use the LED warning lights from Ford’s forward collision warning system.
Limited to just 37 models, the 2015 Ford Shelby GT350R will cost $62,195.
