Google Doodle Celebrates Gustavo Cerati's Birthday

Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati would have turned 56 years old today (Aug. 11). In his honor, Google created a Google Doodle featured on its home page in several countries, including Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, South Korea, México, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico and El Salvador.

Although Google has created Google Doodles of Latin musicians before -- most notably Celia Cruz -- this is the first time a Latin rocker joins the ranks.

Gustavo Cerati Biography Recounts Rock Icon's Last Hours Before Coma in Heartbreaking Detail

Cerati, perhaps the most influential figure in Latin rock, suffered a stroke after a concert in Carcas in 2010, slipped into a comma, and eventually died in Sept. 4, 2014.

In the year after his death, interest in his legacy has remained strong. This week, Argentine journalist Juan Morris released a biography Cerati: La Biografía (Cerati: The Biography), which recounts Cerati’s life and also provides detail of his last hours.

Also, Cirque du Soleil is creating a show inspired by Cerati’s group, Soda Stereo, set to debut in 2017. After opening in a Buenos Aires arena, Montreal’s Cirque and Argentine partners Pop Art expect to tour the musical and acrobatic spectacular to Latin American cities and to Miami, Los Angeles, and possibly other U.S. cities.
