How long will it last?

According to EarthSky this eclipse can be seen for 103 minutes, that is, 1 hour and 43 minutes. This eclipse will be the longest of the century (2001-2100), since the earth will be at its furthest point from the sun – producing a greater shadow – and the moon will also be at its furthest point from Earth's orbit.

This eclipse contrasts with the shortest that occurred on April 4, 2015. According to this same portal, that eclipse lasted only 4 minutes and 48 seconds.

The eclipse will take place with another important event

The eclipse will occur at the same time that the earth is passing between the sun and Mars. According to EarthSky, the Mars counterpart will be the best that has occurred since 2003.

This eclipse has been called the Blood Moon or the Red Moon. The denomination is precisely because the earth will filter sunlight and Mars will be shining near the Moon.

Where can it be seen?

In North America, the eclipse cannot be observed. In certain parts of South America, the final phases of the eclipse can be seen. For example, in Colombia, according to El Tiempo, this astronomical event cannot be seen.

The eclipse can be seen by those in Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand ,and part of Europe.

If you are in Madagascar or the Middle East, where you will best see this phenomenon, you can see the eclipse from midnight.

Do not worry, next year on January 21 there will be another lunar eclipse that will be visible, for example, in Colombian territory.

Fun fact

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 20th century occurred on July 16 of the year 2000 and lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes.
