Study reveals that 1 in 5 deaths is related to pollution

The report, published in the journal Environmental Research and carried out by researchers from Harvard University and the British universities Birmingham, Leicester and University College London, concluded that more than 8 million people die prematurely from pollution in the air . According to the study, this pollution is a consequence of the burning of fossil fuels . Previously, the WHO estimated that deaths from carbon dioxide pollution summed up to 7 million people annually . This new study even confirms that death from pollution is more dangerous than tobacco consumption, since it generates both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, in addition to causing different types of cancer.

From February 22 to 23 , the Fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, whose main theme is " Strengthening action by nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals " . The main objective of this meeting is to bring together the leaders of the member states to mobilize and motivate them to share approaches and solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. This fifth session of the Assembly will be extremely important because, despite having been planned since December 2019, the consequences that the COVD-19 pandemic has brought with it forces governments to act faster than ever to face economic crises post-pandemics and the environmental consequences that they bring. This space will be key to evaluating the policies and measures that governments have chosen to achieve the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.
