The Disney Plus series, The Mandalorian, is a true success. A report by the consulting firm Parrot Analytics had mentioned that this series broadcast under the new platform became the most demanded program in streaming, dethroning Netflix's Stranger Things .

However, many fans aren't happy that the formula for the success of this television series could not be replicated in the sequel trilogy. Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker generated criticism divided among viewers , to the point where it was a disappointment in terms of the income, since it generated barely 1.07 billion dollars .

But, it was the end of the saga charged with the emotional impact and raised less than Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens. All this, obviously, is justified from what the movie trilogy supposed for the fans. Knowing that, in the future, there will be a new series of Star Wars films, we decided to see what went wrong with the legendary LucasFilm saga.

The mistakes of the latest Star Wars trilogy

The first thing to say is that the task of continuing an already finished story was not easy at all. The original trilogy is considered a classic of cinema, to the point where The Hollywood Reporter included it in the number 11 of the best cinematographic works of all time .

This led to, at the time, the prequels, by George Lucas, (also criticized). So the idea of continuing with 3 more episodes as a sequel was difficult . However, the expectations in the first film were really high. The idea of being able to see the most iconic characters on screen, in a much older age, represented a real hope for the fans.

The truth is that the first film was well received. Although it had a structure very similar to Episode IV, the essence of Star Wars was there: the call to adventure of an inexperienced young woman, the appearance of a new villain with enormous power in the galaxy and the conversion to the Dark Side of the Force .

In addition, this film, directed by JJ Abrams, raised the cinematographic quality, with really exquisite shots. However, the film had a problem: it was a true tribute and it did not innovate much, in addition to leaving many questions raised . So in Episode VIII they decided to give the reins to another director: Rian Johnson.

That's where the inconsistencies and subsequent problems in this trilogy began to appear. When changing direction, the meaning given to the work was very different . While it is an excellent film in cinematic terms (with fast pacing and luxurious photography), the idea of giving a new air to Star Wars seemed too far-fetched.

This is whay Disney decided to give againt the direction to Abrams. The problem is that it was too late: the universe had changed due to the previous tape, so they turned to a fan service to try to explain what they couldn't in the previous projects.

The pace feels rcompressed, with explanations of who Snoke was, Rey's connection to The Force, and even Palpatine's return . They tried to save the saga with an epic closure, but that felt forced by having so many elements that were not associated with each other.

Knowing that Disney announced that there will be a new series of films based on the time of the High Republic, this new story that will reach the cinema could learn from the mistakes of the sequels and the success of The Mandalorian. Basically, carefully planning each of the films so that the universe created by George Lucas feels cohesive and all the pieces fit together correctly.
