After a successful 2020, the main video-on-demand platforms are back with an arsenal full of good cinema and great series. Here is a selection of the most interesting series, films and documentaries from the main video-on-demand services for this January.

Netflix

It will be a month and surely also a year before we can finish seeing the premiere of the more than 45 films, documentaries and series (new seasons included) scheduled by Netflix for January 2021.

Cobra Kai

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases by the platform was that of the third season of Cobra Kai, released on January 1st.  There were many unknowns and tensions left by the final chapter of the second season, in which we saw, for example, how Robby Keen disappeared after leaving one of his companions in a coma during a fierce battle in the corridors of the West Valley High School.

Fragments of a woman

According to Sensacine México, this film has proven to be "one of the most anticipated in the 2020 festival circuit." Martha and Sean are about to be parents but after the complication of home birth, they will see their lives submerged in inconceivable pain. The dramatic script written by Kata Weber, produced by Martin Scorcese and directed by Hungarian director Kornél Mondruczó, lasts over 2 hours. It was released on January 7.

Crack, cocaine, corruption and conspiracy

January will also see the premiere of documentary films on Netflix. This is the case of Crack, cocaine, corruption and conspiracy, which will be available on the platform as of January 11, showing the viewer the history of the appearance of crack, its epidemic expansion in the United States and its relationship with the increase in racism and the marginalization of African Americans in the country.

Night stalker: on the hunt for a serial killer

January 13 is the date for which Netflix has announced the premiere of a documentary series divided into four chapters and based on the persecution and arrest of one of the most wanted criminals in the history of the United States: the Mexican Richard Ramírez, author of numerous crimes, rapes, and murders in the 80s in Los Angeles.

Outside the Wire

In this new Netflix movie, a drone pilot is tasked with stopping a nuclear attack by joining forces with an android secret agent. Starring Anthony Mackie and directed by Swede Mikael Håfström, this sci-fi action piece with dystopian touches will be available on the platform from January 15.

Disney +

The streaming service of the giant Disney is not far behind in terms of volume of content. January will see the premiere of a total of 15 productions. Here are some of the most prominent:

MARVEL Studios: Legends

Marvel Studios: Legends appears with the intention of summarizing in a series all the galaxies of the Marvel Universe. To do this, it will return to the origins of it, revisiting heroes and villains. All while the confines of this wonderful sci-fi world created by Stan Lee continues to expand. The first two episodes will be about Wanda and Vision, characters who have their own series on Disney +. Prepare cushions and popcorn for January 8, the date of its premiere.

WandaVision

Marvel Studios' WandaVision comes to be a hybrid that fuses the style of the sitcoms of the 50s with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In it, we will see how the story of the couple formed by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), who were members of Avengers for a long time, continues. In fact, the plot takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and will be the precursor to Wanda's appearance in the movie Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness. Its premiere is scheduled for January 15.

Beyond the Clouds

Following the success of the film Clouds, released last October, Disney has programmed a 10-episode series called Beyond the Clouds in which it delves into the most special moments in the life of Zach, a young high school student with great musical talent who loves to have fun, despite suffering from a rare type of bone cancer. The series is above all a testimony of what it means to live each day as if it were your last. The first chapter opens on January 1 and the next four on January 8, 15, 22 and 29, respectively.

Pixar Popcorn

On January 22, Pixar will return to our screens with a new batch of shorts, one of its favorite film formats. A selection of some of its most iconic characters will be involved in crazy adventures in a total of 8 stories, among which are such interesting titles as Dory Finding, To Fitness and Beyond or Dancing With The Cars.

American Gods season 3

One of the classic problems that arise when adapting a novel to the cinema is the technical inability to bring the entire essence of the original work to the screen. With the third season of American Gods, it seems that this does not happen, because in a letter to fans, the author of the homonymous novel, Neil Gaiman, has said that “America should be for all of us, American Gods should reflect it and this season it really feels like it does." Premiere January 11.

Anime: 4 premieres

On January 15, Japanese animation lovers have a five-time date on Amazon Prime. The third Friday of the month has been the day chosen by the VOD platform to launch the third season of Attack on Titans and to premiere Tokyo Ghoul, Haykiuu !! , and the classics Slayers Revolution and Yu Yu Hakusho. On the other hand, non-Japanese animation is also the protagonist in January with the launch, on the 21st, of the third season of South Park.

3 Caminos

Those who have done the Camino de Santiago, in Spain, will not be able to avoid getting hooked on this series from the first minute. With a great spiritual charge and with transcendental reflections on love, time and existence, 3 Caminos also uses humor to narrate the lives of its protagonists, five friends from different origins who have joined the Camino de Santiago in three moments different, the year 2000, 2006 and 2021. Its premiere is set for January 22.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

On January 22, the crew of the USS Cerritos will begin their journey through the Amazon universe. This animated version of the mythical science fiction saga narrates the adventures of the crew of the aforementioned ship, one of the less important ships of how many make up the Starfleet fleet in 2380. Who directs it? None other than Mike McMahan, the mastermind behind Rick and Morty.
