The Copa América 2020 will arrive in South America from June 12 to July 12. A month where 10 selections belonging to CONMEBOL and 2 of the AFC will face to play one of the most important tournaments in the region. That is why from LatinAmerican Post we want to tell you more about this championship.

1. Two locations

For the first time in the history of this championship, dating from 1916, it will be held in two countries simultaneously. Argentina and Colombia, who put their candidacy to host, were pleasantly surprised to know that both would host the tournament.

The decision, taken from Brazil, was ratified by the president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, who added that this new concept was aimed at "bringing the parties to the people and feeding the football festival", according to statements collected by AS.

In this way, the inauguration will take place on June 12 in Argentina and the final will be held on July 12 in Colombia. In addition, 38 games will be played, 12 more than in the previous tournament, the above because in this competition there are two groups of six members each.

2. Guest Countries

CONMEBOL confirmed that Qatar and Australia are the guests for this edition, taking into account their high performance in this sport. It should be noted that Qatar is the current Asian Cup champion, played from January 5 to February 1, 2019, where Qatar won 3-1 against Japan in the final.

In addition, of the seven games Qatar played throughout the tournament, it managed to win them all. A good average for a team that has shown a progressive evolution towards the celebration of the next World Cup in that country.

On the other hand, Australia, who ended its participation in the same competition in the quarterfinals, has had a complicated period. It should be remembered that in the last World Cup they achieved only one point in the group stage. However, in the hands of coach Graham Arnold, the selection is expected to recover.

3. Copa América 2019 and 2020?

One of the most frequently asked questions is since it was held an edition last year, why is it going to happen this year too? The answer is simply because CONMEBOL wanted to line up with the UEFA championships.

After receiving FIFA's approval in October 2018, CONMEBOL set out to organize the 2020 Copa América, so that from that edition it will take place in even years.

This means that every time there is EuroCopa, there will be Copa América. In addition, and as El Tiempo recalls, the decision helps to "reduce the inconveniences that arise in the transfer of players for their selections in these tournaments, which so far do not coincide in dates."

4. Those who have won the most

Uruguay is placed at the top of the countries that have taken the most Cups, since it is 15, being the last one obtained in 2011. Argentina is followed by 14, but the last time he was crowned champion was in 1993. The current champion Brazil completes the podium with 9 trophies, in addition to being the team that has reached the most finals (12).

5. The favorite

Before the new edition, many wonder about the next favorites. Among the main names that sound, are Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The first will seek to maintain the title of the hand of a selection that is constantly growing; while the second, commanded by Messi, will seek to break the 'curse' of not winning any title with a team that has achieved success internationally.

Meanwhile, Uruguay will seek the triumph of a team that has some of the most important players of the decade, such as Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez. However, we cannot leave the other host behind: Colombia. The coffee team will try to show why it is in the top ten teams in the FIFA ranking, after an early start in the round of 16 when Chile beat them on penalties.
