Netflix hires the creators of “Game of Thrones”

David Benioff and DB Weiss, creators and showrunners of "Game of Thrones", signed with Netflix a global agreement to develop audiovisual productions for this digital platform, Deadline specialized media reported Wednesday.

"We are excited to welcome Netflix to master storytellers David Benioff and DB Weiss," said Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos, who beat other entertainment giants like Disney or Amazon who had also bid for brains behind "Game of Thrones."

"They are a creative force and have dazzled audiences around the world with their epic narration. We look forward to seeing what your imaginations are going to bring to our members", he added.

For their part, David Benioff and DB Weiss said they have enjoyed more than a decade of "beautiful" travel on HBO and showed their enthusiasm for joining Netflix now.

"In recent months we have spent many hours talking with (Netflix managers) Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as with Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same plans of the same movies of the 80s, we love the same books, we get excited with the same narrative possibilities", they said.

"Netflix has built something amazing and unprecedented, and we are honored to be invited to join," they added.

Deadline placed the signing of David Benioff and DB Weiss in the billionaire range of "the nine figures" with which Netflix also hired other creative television stars such as Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy

Media like Variety said Rhimes will charge Netflix at least US$ 150 million for five years while Murphy could take up to US$ 300 million at the same time.

Hollywood Reporter sources said Wednesday that Netflix has hired the creators of "Game of Thrones" for US$ 200 million without specifying the number of years.

Benioff and Weiss have made history on television with "Game of Thrones," HBO's epic fantasy series that has been fired this year turned into a huge worldwide phenomenon.

"Game of Thrones" is the most recognized series in the history of the Emmy, with 47 awards, and for this year's gala it has 32 nominations, the record for a show in a single edition of these awards.

Apart from their plans on Netflix, Benioff and Weiss also have among their future projects to write several films for the "Star Wars" saga.
