Thunberg, 16, has inspired young protesters seeking to raise awareness and more drastic actions in the face of climate change around the world, warning of the dangers of inaction in the face of global warming.

"I have been offered a trip on the 60-foot Malizia II racing boat," she said in an Instagram post. "We will sail across the Atlantic Ocean from the United Kingdom to New York in mid-August," she added.

"The science is clear. We must begin to reverse the gas emission curve markedly before 2020 if we still want to have a chance to remain below the threshold of 1.5 Celsius degrees in the average global temperature rise," said Thunberg.

Pierre Casiraghi, founder of Team Malizia and co-captain of the transatlantic trip, said he believed in the importance of raising awareness about rising global emissions and pollution.

"Convincing governments and international institutions to advance and implement laws that will protect the human race and biodiversity is of utmost importance for the future of humanity," Casiraghi said in a statement.
