Super Bowl, Champions and Tour de France: Which is the most influential sporting event?

The most important annual sporting events in the world are the final of the UEFA Champions League; the 'queen stage' of the Tour de France, the most prestigious cycling competition; and the Super Bowl, the final of the NFL championship. Being the highest contention scenarios in soccer, cycling, and American football, it is no coincidence that these are the events that more money, logistics, and people move. However, how do these sports giants compare in numbers?

The first thing: the money

According to the agency AFP, the Tour de France -which runs every year in the month of July- delivers a little less than $ 2,700,000 in prizes. The winner of the competition takes 587 thousand dollars, while the winners of the stages take 13 thousand dollars per stage. According to the newspaper La Nación of Argentina, the sponsors of the race pay a little more than 400 thousand dollars to be part of the 12 km long caravan, in which they distribute to the audience up to 18 million advertising objects.

The portal Portafolio noted that winning the Super Bowl -which is played in February and crowned the Philadelphia Eagles this year- generates each player 112 thousand dollars, while the runners-up take 56 thousand. Normally the chain that broadcasts the game, either CBS, FOX or NBC in turns, can generate profits of up to 213 million dollars only in the advertising that is transmitted during the game. According to the newspaper As, 30 seconds of advertising can cost about 5 million dollars.

According to the newspaper As, the most important club tournament in the world, the Champions League, distributes a little more than 1500 million dollars in prizes to the 32 participants. For this edition that culminates with the match in Kiev, a team that won all its games could pocket almost 62 million dollars. However, neither Liverpool nor Madrid could achieve it, since they did not have a perfect campaign. Anyway, the champion will receive 17.5 million dollars while the loser takes 12.8 million, not counting the television bonuses.

The human material: people

It is estimated that, on the road, the Tour de France attracts between 10 and 12 million people only, although the number of people who see the race around the world is not clear. On the other hand, the Super Bowl is seen by almost 220 million people in the world, including the American audience. Instead, 350 million people saw the final in Cardiff between Real Madrid and Juventus, where the Merengue squad crushed the Italians 4-1.

In relation to the final disputed a few days ago in Kiev, there are some interesting data. It gathered 9.3 million spectators in Spain in front of the television, which makes it the most-watched broadcast of the current season.

Similarly, there is data provided by Antena 3, which aired the game, that indicates that an average of 55.3% of the audience followed the victory of the Madrid team. The chain of Atresmedia Televisión was thus proclaimed leader by taking the "golden minute", bringing together 11.3 million spectators (60.1% of the audience).

However, this data may surprise a bit and is that the number is the lowest of the last Champions League finals disputed by Real Madrid. This is because last year's final against Juventus had more than 9.6 million (56.9%) and that of 2016 against Atlético de Madrid touched 9.5 million spectators (57.3%).

Social networks and media

Portafolio assures that the Tour de France attracts an average of 2,000 journalists and has been transmitted to 190 countries. Likewise, in 2015 it reached 150 million visits on its Facebook page, as well as 2.8 million followers on that social network and another 2.9 million on Twitter.

On the other hand, in 2018 the match between the Eagles and the Patriots generated 27 million tweets, while Facebook generated 240 million interactions in content related to the Super Bowl. According to As, the event was broadcast to 200 countries.

According to the Digital Football Community portal, the broadcast of the Champions League final was seen in 210 countries around the world and 1,000 journalists were at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff covering the match. The newspaper As noted that during matches like Saturday's in Kiev, some 34 million Facebook users interacted during the game while Twitter activity was shot at 82% during the 90 minutes.
