This ambition was articulated by the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Omar Paganini, during his speech at the opening forum of the first edition of Agro en Punta, an agro-export fair held in this South American nation.

At the event, Paganini emphasized Uruguay’s strategic direction towards becoming an increasingly prominent center for innovation in bioeconomy. He outlined a vision where the food industry and broader agricultural sector constantly evolve, innovate, and move towards greater sustainability.

Paganini highlighted that Uruguay’s strength lies in its rich natural resources and agricultural productive capacity. New production methods have enhanced and leveraged this capacity, making the country more competitive in quality and productivity.

Echoing Paganini’s sentiments, Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries Fernando Mattos underscored the significance of this sector in Uruguay’s economy during his presentation. He noted that the agricultural industry faces increasing challenges due to climate change and stressed the need for public policies that encourage adaptation to these realities.

Mattos stated, “There’s a productive vocation and commitment, and in our governmental responsibility, shared with society, we must design public policies that provide more tools to face these climatic phenomena that will surely recur.”

He also discussed the importance of developing technological tools to enhance the competitiveness of agricultural production. Contrary to the often-repeated notion that agriculture does not employ technology, Mattos asserted the growing need for technological incorporation in agriculture.

Agro en Punta: A Platform for Integration

Agro en Punta, taking place in the Convention Center in Punta del Este, is a business integration platform for Uruguay’s agro-industrial sector. The 2024 edition is its first and features various forums, auctions, exhibitions, and business rounds scheduled until Saturday.
