Since the beginning of November, the rumor has spread that there will soon be a great global blackout, which has generated concern not only in the civil community, but even in the political spheres. Several governments have come to define the steps that the population should follow in the event that this event occurs. But, what would this blackout consist of? What are its causes and consequences?

What is a blackout and why would it happen?

A blackout happens when there is a large-scale power failure and it lasts for days and even weeks. Considering the importance of energy service to our daily lives, this scenario could be not only troublesome, but also terrifying. Just think that the only source of light you would have would be the sun during the day. In addition, there would be an economic stagnation for which later there would have to be compensations and, in the long run, more gas would be spent on said compensation. Blackouts can occur due to failures in energy sources and supplies, damage to power lines, maintenance problems, among others.

Let's not forget that at the beginning of October this year, experts affirmed the possibility of the existence of an energy crisis due to the climate crisis and the increase in demand for these.

Where and when will it happen?

Although talking about a "great global blackout" seems exaggerated, the truth is that it is not impossible that it exists. In the event that the hypothesis that is being discussed so far, it cannot be defined if it will affect every corner of the planet earth, but it is known that, if it happens, it would be in Europe. In fact, the origin of these speculations comes directly from several countries on the continent in which today there has been a gas shortage for some time.

Given this, political authorities, such as those in Austria, have gotten down to work and have called the attention of their citizens so that they are prepared to receive the blackout. Countries like China and India have already implemented recurring intense blackouts for their citizens in order to save on fossil fuels.

How do we react?

After the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more than clear that fear of the unknown can be dangerous. Faced with this situation, several citizens of different European cities have taken to the streets to buy supplies to stock up. In other words, a gathering fever has been created. This, in response, above all, to the winter season.
