Martin Scorsese loves gangster stories. We owe him the contemporary classics of the organized crime genre such as Goodfellas , Casino and The Departed . The director knows not only to take advantage of these stories but to reinvent them several times and find something new on this topic in each production. This year will launch The Irishman, another gangster film that will feature actors also classics within the genre and Scorsese's career: Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. What's The Irishman about ?

It is based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. In almost five years of interviews, the well-known gangster Frank Sheeran confesses to the author that he has handled more than twenty murders for the North American mafia. The title refers to the first sentence that his friend Jimmy Hoffa tells Sheeran: "they tell me you paint houses," which would mean "they tell me you kill." The painting would be, then, the blood that splashes on the walls when a hit man does his job. The Irishman tells the story of Frank Sheeran, who is already old, played by Robert DeNiro, recalls through flashbacks his story as a hitman for the mafia, but above all, the murder of his friend Jimmy Hoffa, who told him the words that titled the book on which the tape is based.

James Hoffa was, as well as a friend of his own murderer, a famous trade union leader of Dutch origins. He worked for a long time as a leader of the International Brotherhood of Truckers and from there obtained legal regulations in favor of his guild. In the 1950s, he was accused of using members of the mafia to intimidate small and large businessmen into negotiating their terms with their union members. This was done in exchange for cleaning up the mafia's income by declaring services that supposedly their union members lent to the heads of this criminal organization. We will see all this in The Irishman, in which the links of Hoffa with the mafia are not in doubt.

We will see once again a collaboration between DeNiro and Scorsese, but this time much more mature and more deliberate. It would be the ninth time of these two working together and the first time that Scorsese will work with Al Pacino, who will play Jimmy Hoffa, and who is also already a veteran of the gangster films, as he played the leading role in Scarface. Joe Pesci, meanwhile, will also participate in the movie and is also a classic big-screen gangster (Casino, Goodfellas. )

Who will produce The Irishman ?

The new Martin Scorsese tape will be a Netflix production. The script was adapted by Steven Zaillian ( American Gangster, Gangs of New York ). It started shooting in 2017 and according to the announcement of the streaming platform, will be released in the fall. The movie had a bigger budget than The Wolf of Wall Street, so much is expected of it, it would be the most expensive film of the director's career. It is also expected that in addition to the premiere on the platform, the film will also be released in cinemas. So far there has only been an official announcement that shows the names of the actors that will participate in the film, but there is no official image of the art of the film.
