Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott built his name into a global brand before he agreed to do his first Florida project, the 52-story condominium Jade Beach that is being built on Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach.

''We really thought that he would bring an extra level of quality,'' said Edgardo DeFortuna, the lead developer of Jade Beach and owner of Miami brokerage Fortune International Realty. ``Carlos is primarily in charge of the overall look. It's really very futuristic.''

A steel-and-glass headquarters for FTAA in Miami

Miami offered on Monday to build the Western Hemisphere a waterfront office complex with steel arches and glass walls to house the headquarters of a proposed free-trade zone.

Hoping to beat out 10 other cities in the contest for the secretariat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, city and state leaders unveiled their vision of the facility and the reasons why it should be in Miami.
