Donald Trump: Betting on economic growth or just refusing collaboration?

The president of the United States decided to withdraw the nation from the Paris Agreement (PA) after claiming it to be unfair and not aligned with what is best for the “US business, citizens, and tax payers”

Donald Trump has made it well known that he is skeptical on the matter of global warming. In more than a few opportunities, the United States’ president has denied the effects of human activities on climate change showing a very sharp contrast with the work previously done by Barack Obama.

Trump suggested the global commitments for emission reduction will not represent a significant decrease on global temperature. Moreover, he stated that the Paris Agreement deviates a significant amount of financial resources out of the country and represents an unfair accord compared to China’s. According to the president of the United States, the accord allowed the Asian country to even double their coal production.

Curiously enough, his affirmations have raised more than one eyebrow and it has caused him countless backlash within the citizens of the world. Few conclusions have been made post the announcement of withdraw from the Paris Accord. For example, the task to battle climate change depends on taking a series of incremental steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, not participating in the PA would require even bigger reductions in the future. Second, the US committed $1 billion to the financial aid of developing countries to tackle their mitigation and adaptation needs. However, this amount represents only the 0.001% of the 3.9 trillion spending in 2016 fiscal year.

Finally, the PA never mentions the word “coal” nor mandates a limit on coal plants constructions to any of the participating parties. Although China’s voluntary reduction plan allowed emission to reach a peak by 2030, the country is driving away from a fossil fuel based economy, has reduced their construction of said plants, and utilization of such.
