Nowadays, Latin America is increasingly recognized worldwide for its diverse cultural expressions. The trend is also reflected in the Latin American modern art, a cultural expression that demonstrates the sophistication and variety of our region in New York.
Assuming the leadership and spokesman of the region, the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) will donate 150 works to the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) An event that becomes the most important milestone in the history of Latin American art, preserving an artistic legacy for future generations under the protection of a cultural site of renowned reputation and reach.
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is a little bit more Latin American today. Venezuelan Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, one of the largest private art collectors in the world, has donated total of 102 works made between 1940 and 1990 by artists from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. It joins 40 other pieces given by Cisneros to the same institution over the last 16 years. Ultimately, it is the largest delivery of Latin American art done so far. The deal, announced Monday, includes the creation of a research institute that is dedicated to modern and contemporary art of the region.
Founded in 1929 by the Rockefeller and other fortunes of the city, MoMA showed a particular interest in Latin American art from the beginning of his career. Diego Rivera focused his second solo exhibition (the first was Henri Matisse), which lasted five weeks, from late 1931 and early 1932. It also was the first museum outside Latin America in collecting works of that part of continent.
"I think our culture has been relegated"
Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and MoMA director Glenn D. Lowry, pose in the New York museum, along with a work by Alejandro Otero.
"I am very proud of our Hispanic heritage and will do everything I can to show the glory of our culture, that's my work as a bridge between the two countries, but do not get involved in politics," he says this woman raised and formed straddles Caracas and the United States.
But how much do we know the MoMA? The new home of the collection was the first museum devoted to modern and contemporary era, opening its doors in 1929. It has a potential audience of three million annual visitors to the museum's facilities and 12.1 million users entering to digital channels of the museum.
His legacy goes beyond art collections, breaking schemes and surpassing all sorts of cultural barriers by supporting disciplines not allowed in other galleries and museums. The acquisition of video game source code, to consider art, represents an example of its diversity; Pac-Man and Tetris are some of these. Its mission is to preserve and commemorate all that mankind considers art without discriminating any discipline.
Houses important masterpieces like Starry Night by Van Gogh, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso and The Persistence of Memory by Dali, also features works by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, among many others. It also has collections of Sculpture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Architecture and design, drawings and prints, Room Cinema, Audiovisual and Performance Art.
The best museum of modern art in the world and sanctuary for many, then invites us to be part of history and visit the works donated by the CPPC as part of a historical exhibition on the occasion of the inauguration of the new building of MoMA, in 2020.
