1,200 Mexican federal police and an unknown number of U.S. agents. He
faces multiple indictments in the United States for importing tons of
cocaine. Mexican authorities say he is a kidnapper, torturer and murderer
- as well as a major trafficker of marijuana and cocaine.

La indiferencia y el escaso entusiasmo cívico han caracterizado la campaña para los comicios presidenciales del 28 de octubre ante pronósticos prácticamente unánimes que anticipan el triunfo de la senadora Cristina Fernández, esposa del presidente Néstor Kirchner.
La única incógnita que resta es si la candidata del centroizquierdista Frente para la Victoria triunfaría en primera vuelta, o si debería competir el 25 de noviembre en un balotaje con el candidato opositor más votado.
Los últimos sondeos coinciden en que, salvo que ocurra un terremoto político, la senadora Fernández superaría los requisitos para eludir una segunda vuelta. Son ellos obtener el 45 por ciento de los votos, o más del 40 por ciento, si logra una diferencia superior a diez puntos sobre su más próximo contendiente.
La vigorosa recuperación de la economía argentina, después de la grave crisis del 2001, y el descenso de los niveles de desempleo, pobreza y marginalidad social logrados por la Administración de Kirchner parecen ser el principal sustento de la ventaja electoral de su esposa.
La campaña de la oposición no parece haber logrado instalar en la población el temor a un rebrote inflacionario, centro de su reciente prédica, como tampoco sus denuncias sobre supuestos actos de corrupción o tendencias autoritarias en el gobierno.
La prensa local publicó la semana pasada los sondeos efectuados por ocho encuestadores (Poliarquía Consultores, Rosendo Fraga, Hugo Haime, Artemio López, Manuel Mora y Araujo, Analía del Franco, Heriberto Muraro y Roberto Bacman). Todos coincidieron en que Fernández quedará seguramente consagrada Presidenta el 28 de octubre.
Su principal contendiente, según esos sondeos, es Elisa Carrió, candidata de la moderada Coalición Cívica, quien venía sosteniendo que la segunda vuelta estaba cada día más cercana y que en ella seguramente derrotaría a la primera dama.
Pero en declaraciones que publicó ayer el diario LaCapital de la ciudad de Rosario, Carrió admitió que ``todavía hoy es difícil que haya balotaje, aunque seguimos creciendo mucho''.
